Grove v Horton Kirby - April 20 2003
The Grove opened
their season with a 2 run defeat at Horton Kirby. Chasing 145 for victory
they fell two runs short of victory when senior batsman Paul Hartley was
bowled off the penultimate ball of the match.

Grove v Carlton Sports - April 27 2003
The Grove chalked up their first
win of the season in a low scoring game away to Carlton Sports. Batting
first they failed to adjust to the conditions as the bowlers took the upper
hand and limped to 103 all out. Mark Hammond top scored with a slow and far
from chanceless 23. Carlton also soon found the going tough as they
slumped to 9 for 3. Needing 30 off 5 overs some superb bowling at the
death by Shane Carroll (4 - 22 from 8 overs) saw Carlton crash to 86 all out,
Tony Pope also weighed in with a very economical (4-31
from 18 overs). |

Grove v Prospect Park - May 4 2003
The Grove failed to capitalise on
the solid foundations of their opening batsmen as they went down by 3
wickets away to Prospect Park. Batting first Tony Pope 73 and Norman
Winterman 57 not out put on 125 for the first wicket and with Alan Burgess
weighing in with an unbeaten 28 including 3 sixes posted 184 for 2 off
their 40 overs at tea.
The visitors bowling and fielding then failed to match up with their
earlier exploits and with injuries to two frontline bowlers the Prospect
Park openers plundered 106 off the first 20 overs. Man of the match Norman
Winterman took 4 for 21 and put the brakes on the middle order as they
struggled to 137 for 5 before some rearguard action saw them home with 9
balls to spare. |

Grove v Roan Lambethians - May 11 2003
The
Grove's match with Roan Lambethians was abandoned as persistent rain came
out the winner. Roan batted first and put on 120 for the first wicket before the first
deluge of rain and the innings was declared on 145 for 1 during the early
tea interval. The Grove reply lasted just 5 overs before a halt was called to play
following a further downpour with the visitors at 28 for 1.

Grove v Gateway - May 18 2003
The Grove failed to press home
their advantage as they
had to settle for a draw away to Gateway. Chasing 150 for victory they
looked comfortable at 90 for 2. Norman Winterman 53 and Tony Pope put on
82 for the second wicket before both succumbing as the brakes were put on
a Grove victory. With the middle order in disarray the Innings collapsed
to 131 for 9 at
stumps. Gateway reached 150 for 7 against some tidy bowling from the
visitors.

Grove v Dartford/Halls - May 25 2003
A weakened Grove were put to the
sword as they visited Dartford/Halls at Hesketh Park when the home side
amassed 227 for 6. Paul Mathews and Brad Buttone both picked up 3 wickets,
for 65 and 60 respectively. In reply, the Grove could only muster 120 with Shane Carroll powering his
way to 47 including 9 boundaries.

Grove v Nuxley - June 1 2003
The Grove chalked up an awesome
victory as they beat the thunder, lightening, failing light and rain to
beat Nuxley by six wickets. In a game reduced to 35 overs the visitors hit
an Impressive 179 for 7 at a rate of over 5 an over. The Groves bowling
find of the season Norman Winterman picked up 3 for 38. Despite the steady
rain The Grove started well with Mark Hammond and Paul Hartley hitting a
quickfire 22 and 25 respectively. A magnificent limited overs inning of
85no from Tony Pope and some lusty hitting from Paul Burgess (28) put on
75 for the fourth wicket steered their side to victory as they finished on
183 for 4 with six balls to spare. |

Grove v Wilmington - June 8 2003
A fourth wicket unbeaten stand of
124 between Tony Pope 90no and Alan Burgess 41no paved the way for a 34
run Grove victory over Wilmington 2nd X1.
Coming together at 45 for 3 they quickly moved the scoreboard forward
reaching 169 for 3 off their allotted 35 overs at tea. The visitors were
soon in trouble at 9 for 2, though they did put up some middle order
resistance. A swashbuckling late flurry of runs
was not enough as they were dismissed for 135. |

Grove v Earlsfield Strollers - June 15 2003
The Grove fielded a weakened side
for their visit to Earlsfield Strollers and were made to pay the price as
they went down by 129runs. Strollers hit 243 with Paul Hartley and Norm
Winterman picking up 3 for 41 and 3for 45 respectively. In reply Ian Kaye 29 and Peter Mayhew added 49 for
the first wicket before a middle order collapse saw The Grove lose their
remaining nine wickets for just 63 runs as they were skittled for 114 all
out. |

Grove v Bexley Park - June 22 2003
The Grove went down by 55 runs in
their match at Bexley Park. In a 35 overs a side game Bexley looked well placed for a good score at 136 for 4 however some
inspired bowling and
fielding by The Grove saw the last six wickets fall for just 23 runs as
they dismissed Bexley Park for 159. Ben Boggis picked up 3 for 6 and
Norman Winterman and Alan Burgess two apiece. In reply the visitors lost
wickets on a regular basis and although Liam Hammond hit a patient 29no
there was little support to keep the scoreboard moving with the Innings finishing
on 104 for 9. |

Grove v Carlton Sports - June 29 2003
The Grove slid to their third
consecutive defeat as they went down by 8 wickets at home to Carlton
Sports. Put in to bat they failed to master the visitors bowling and were indebted
to Derek Ivil 24, and a last wicket partnership of 40 from Norman Winterman
21no and Liam Hammond 17 to chalk up up 143 off their 35 overs. Despite
the loss of both openers to Paul Hartley an unbeaten third wicket partnership of 78 saw Carlton home with three overs to
spare. |

Grove v Bexleyheath - July 06 2003
The Grove put in one of their
better fielding and bowling displays but still went down by 34 runs to
Bexleyheath at Park View road. Electing to bat Heath found runs hard to
come by and were all out for 110. Shane Carroll picked up 3 for 31 with
Tony Pope and Brad Bottone bagging two apiece. The Grove reply started
disastrously as they slumped to 10 for 4, and then to 18 for 6. Jason
Cross hit 23 but by then the damage had been done as the visitors were
bowled out for 76. |

Grove v Wilmington - July 13 2003
The Grove went down by 4 wickets to
Wilmington away at Oakfield Park. On a pitch that favoured the bowlers the
visitors got off to a good start with Mark Hammond 31, and Vijay Ratnayaka
putting on 49 for the opening wicket. Only Paul Hartley with 21 made any
further impact as the Grove were bowled out for 145. Some wayward bowling
and fielding including six dropped catches did not help The Grove's cause
as the home side won with 4 wickets with 5 overs to spare. |

Grove v Nuxley - July 20 2003
The Grove's poor run of form
continued as they went down by 44 runs in a 40over game away to Nuxley.
Bowling first the visitors produced some tight bowling from Pope and
Bottone with only 15 runs coming off the first 10 overs. Some big hitting
propelled Nuxley through to 208 for 5 off 40 overs. Shane Carroll's
dramatically bad form this season continued when he conceded 38 runs from
four awful overs and he withdrew himself from the attack. Tony Pope 24 and Mark Hammond put on 47
for the first Grove wicket in reply before slumping to 75 for 5. As the run
rate increased to over 8 an over Alan Burgess made a hard hitting 47 along
with Brad Bottone 24 but it was not enough as the innings closed on 164 for 9. |
| The
Grove v Old Dartechs - July 27 2003
A weakened Grove played host to Old
Dartechs, and soon found themselves on the back foot. A club record
opening partnership of 185 put the visitors in the driving seat aided by some sloppy fielding and a number of dropped catches. In
reply The Grove lost their first three wickets for 25 before a fifth
wicket partnership of 66 between Derek Ivil 33no and Liam Hammond 27 saw
them through to 115 for 6 as the game petered out for a draw. |
| The
Grove v Pembury Hospital - August 04 2003
In glorious sunny conditions The
Grove returned to winning ways with an eighty run victory at home to
Pembury hospital. The Grove won the toss, batted first and put on 43 for
the first wicket with 25 apiece for Jason Cross & Tony Pope. Shane
Carroll added a career best 74 not out as the strong start saw The Grove
through to 175 all out. In reply Pembury were never in the hunt, with Paul
Matthews (4/27) and Brad Bottone (2/21) ripping the heart out of the
oppositions top order. An all around improvement in the field by The Grove
eventually saw them home to a comfortable victory. |

Grove v Old Colfeians - August 10 2003
The Grove went unbeaten for the
third consecutive match in a tense draw at home to Old Colfeians. Chasing
210,they were cruising on 179 for 3 thanks to a blazing third wicket
partnership of 83 between Brad Bottone 71 and Shane Carroll 52, after
Jason Cross had hit a patient 21. Needing 12 off the last two overs they
could only muster 5 runs finishing on 204 for 8. Old Colfeians had earlier
plundered the bowling on a great batting track despite the efforts of
Derek Ivil whose bowling figures were 3 for 73. |
| The
Grove v Eden Park - August 17 2003
The Grove, in a last minute change traveled to Eden Park and in the process picked up a comfortable 8 wicket victory. Norman Winterman 65no and Peter Mayhew 45
paved the way with a 99 run second wicket partnership before Brad Bottone
chipped in with 25no as the visitors reached 176 for 2 with 10 balls
remaining, chasing the hosts 172 for 8. |
| The
Grove v Farningham - August 24 2003
The Grove lost 3 wickets in their
first over without scoring as they crashed to a 60 run defeat at the hands
of Farningham.
From this position they never recovered and were bowled out for 136
despite the jug avoiding efforts of Paul Hartley 49, Alan Burgess 29 and
Mark Hammond 25. Farningham had earlier struggled against some tight Grove
bowling and
fielding with Brad Bottone picking up 3 for 51 before reaching 196 for 8. |
| The
Grove v Dartford Postal - August 27 2003
In the annual Wednesday fixture The
Grove went down by 10 runs to Dartford Postal. Chasing to 211 for victory
they crashed in the gloom from 174 for 4, to 201 all out with John Steel
hitting 57,Ian Kingham 56 and Brad Bottone 20. |
| The
Grove v Eynsford - August 31 2003
A fine all round performance by
skipper Alan Burgess led The Grove to a four wicket victory at Eynsford.
Returning figures of 4 for 16 he had the home some side struggling on
78 for 5 before a rearguard action moved the score on to 160 all out. Paul
Hartley snapped the best catch in Grove history when his advancing years
were taken into account. Paul Burgess 42 and Norman Winterman 34 came
together at 52 for 4 for the visitors and put together a useful 70 for the
fifth wicket before two quick wickets pegged them back to 122 for 6. A
quick fire 24no from Alan Burgess including two big sixes that endangered
the nearby houses put the game beyond doubt with Norman Winterman hitting
a six for the winning runs as they finished on 166 for 6 with 2.3 overs to
spare. |
| The
Grove v Belvedere - September 7 2003
The Grove heavily regretted two
missed catches by stand in wicket keeper Mark Hammond as Belvedere's opening
batsman was dropped on 12 and 55 and went on to make 155no as they went down by 65 runs at Woolwich Road. Belvedere closed on a massive 293
for 4 off 35 overs with Norman Winterman picking up 3 for 39. In reply The
Grove ran up a credible 228 but no one went on to make any significant impact.
Winterman hit 44, Paul Hartley 35no, Alan Burgess 30, Shane Carroll 26 and
Peter Mayhew 20 but is was not enough as the innings closed on 228 for 6. |
| The
Grove v Irving - September 14 2003
A single off the last ball gave The
Grove a six wicket win at home to Irving. Chasing 200 to win Peter Mayhew
hit his maiden half century for The Grove in an opening stand of 73
with Shane Carroll whose quick fire 40 got The Grove off to the start they
needed. Mayhew also contributed to a third wicket partnership of 66 with
Tony Pope 53no, with shots all around the ground before being stumped for
68. In a tight and exciting encounter the home side got home when they
finished on 200 for 4. Irving had started brightly when their opener
refused to walk after clearly edging to the wicketkeeper. Some tight
bowling from Tony Pope and 3 for 41 from Shane Carroll saw their innings
close on 199 for 6. |
| The
Grove v Clapham Nomads - September 21 2003
Both sides struggled for players in
this late season encounter and as a result a seven a side 25 over match
was played. The Grove batted first and put on 194 with Shane Carroll &
John Steele putting on 128 in 12 overs. The opposition moaned their way
through to 160 when they were all out in the last over. |

Grove v Bromley Common - September 28 2003
The Grove wrapped up their season
with a disappointing 6 wicket reverse at Bromley Common. Winning the toss
and electing to bat they were indebted to a third wicket partnership
of 70 between Vijay Ratnayaka and John Steel to help steer them
through to 166 for 6 off 35 overs. Some tight bowling from Tony Pope and
Paul Hewagama restricted Bromley to just 56 runs off the first 18 overs,
but with a break for rain and a wet ball the change bowlers couldn't find
the same groove and Bromley got home with 4 overs to spare. Both openers
fell to Ben Boggis but by then the damage had been done. |
